Like, why does it let you tighten it but not loosen it. I am very confused

So you can’t take it off and hand it to someone else and share the benefits it gives you. *You* paid for it, not anyone else.
The actual mechanism is a ring of pins that are angled to poke into the fabric. Tightening works because the pins drag along the fabric while trying to pull the other way the pins dig into the fabric
