How does the “Mystery China Box” magic trick work?

I do not know, but the few videos that I saw have something in common – the demonstrator always has one or more fingers on the bottom of the box, on the tall-tube side, during the trick. One video even goes so far as to grab the balls in such a way that those fingers are hidden from view.
My guess is that something there can be manipulated which changes the position of the tubes – either sliding or tilting them both towards the tall-tube side (and then back).
