The self cleaning option in an oven is normally about 900 degrees Fahrenheit. So everything in the oven is literally incinerated and reduced to pile of ash.

If the oven has been properly designed, using the self cleaning option should not reduce the life of the oven. This is assuming you are not turning on the self cleaning option and just letting it run wild for days on end.
