How does synthesia piano work? (music)

So, if I want to practice on my keyboard some nice anime openings, how can I do that? I see sometimes “Anime Opening Song on Piano”. It shows a guy playing the piano but also falling, colored bars which signal him which key he should press. If looked up correctly, synthesia is a software which is basically that. It turns piano practice into a rhythm game. I assume you just connect your piano to your PC and then it works but these piano youtube videos projected synthesia on the keyboard. So I wonder, are they using some high tech keyboard or how do you do that?

It uses a thing called MIDI technology. It’s designed to convert analog musical notes into digital data. MIDI files are what hold songs and the corresponding notes that are played at which time. Synthesia takes these files and visualizes their notes as falling bars.
