how does spam email work?

When signing up for a service for example netflix how does your email get shared so quickly that the next day your inbox is full of spam? Specially if you only use your email for reputable websites? Is there any way to protect against this happening?

Sometimes emails lists are stolen i.e. someone hacks Netflixs and steals database that lists all emails.

Other times emails are sold – i.e. Netflix approaches Fuckbook and says “Hey, we have a list of 10,000 emails with confirmed users, we can sell it to you for $500”.

The only way to prevent this is to use a separate email for each and every service you use, and point them all to a single “hidden” email that you never share with everyone. Its a massive hassle however, and not worth it for 99% of users.

What you can do however is use three emails – one that you only use for business and official stuff, and never share with anyone outside of that. One more that you use for personal stuff – i.e. family, friends. ANd one throwaway one that you use to register on websites like Facebook etc.

Once the email has been leaked, there’s nothing you can do.
