Send out a high frequency sound, it’ll bounce against anything it hits and come back and picked up by a machine. By calculating how long it took for the sound to get there and back you can tell how far away the object was, and hence, with all the different vibrations (sound) coming back at different times, you can create an image.

We utilize both a sender and receiver. The sender fires a pulse, the pulse reflects off the target, and the receiver listens for that pulse. We know how fast the pulse moves and can measure the direction it comes from, this can be used to calculate the size and distance of the object that reflected the pulse.
