How does our brain actually decide if we like a song or not?

I don’t know if this is explainable per se, but it feels arbitrary. There is no consistency to what type of song I like. Sure, I like rap, but I can’t narrow it down beyond that. I’ll just hear something, and usually later on, I’ll realize that I really liked that song (or after hearing it a few times). Conversely, and I’m sure I’m not alone here, there are those popular songs that everyone loves but we hate. I’m sure memory and nostalgia is mixed into that, but there must be a better explanation?

We don’t know.

Scientist are barely starting to understand how the brain works, by identifying which areas are active during what kind of activities (such as your sight being processed in the back of your brain).

But how exactly that happens, or why, we don’t exactly know.

One theory is that our brain really likes recognizing patterns (such as say, faces, a visual pattern, which evolutionarily would help our survival by letting us spot predators quicker). And that love for patterns translates over to songs where obviously a major section is the rhythm and beat.

But again, we don’t know that for sure, it’s just a theory.
