NFC is pretty simple. It stands for Near Field Communication. You have a device that is powered, and can send a radio signal. You have an antenna, which is not powered.

When you bring the radio signal very close to the antenna, the radio waves send power to the antenna. This “Wakes up” the antenna, giving it the power to send some information back to the device that sent the signal.

That way, you can get radio communication from a very small object that doesn’t have power or batteries. It’s the exact same technology that your credit card uses when you tap to pay.
