Discretion is when you are careful not to disclose confidential information. Discernment means to tell physical things apart (like if two things are close to each other and are small, you can still see them separately) or abstract things (like tell right from wrong).

Discernment is evaluation carefully between choices, or evaluating a thing carefully.

Discretion is the use of caution and tact when doing a thing.

One is choose carefully. The other is act carefully.

Discernment is about observation, the ability to tell one thing from another, even when they are very similar.

Discretion is about judgment, knowing when to share things others don’t know, and especially knowing when not to. It can also refer to delegation, letting someone explicitly that they have the authority to make a decision.

A discerning person might pick up on the evidence their boss is having an affair. A discrete person would keep that to themselves.
