Tobacco smoke causes the vocal cords to relax deepening the speaker’s voice somewhat. The smoke also is irritating and damaging to everything it comes into contact with, including the vocal cords and the parts of the mouth and throat involved with speech.

Long-term irritation of their airways causes constant mucus production and smoker’s cough, which loosens their vocal cords and inflames the airway. Since the tighter the vocal cords the higher the voice, when the muscles surrounding the cords don’t work as well, their voice gets lower and rougher.
