How does baking soda remove small scratches from glass?

The cleaning lady left hundreds of small scratches on my window (no clue how she did it). Using baking soda I managed to remove most of them. How is this possible?

Baking soda is a mild abrasive. You sort of smeared out the edges of the scratches so that they’re not so distinct and noticeable.
