How do you make seemingly long videos?

I got an MP4 from someone in Discord and the file was 591 minutes long (it wasn’t really that long though, probably like 3-5 minutes long). I’m curious, how was it achieved?

What’s more than likely going on here is that the file was encoded using what’s called a *variable bit rate,* where the bit rate of the video (how much data is used to encode each second of video) goes up and down depending on how much data the encoding program thought was needed.

Operating systems can tend to be stupid at times, and if it looks at the first couple of frames and sees a low bit rate, it will take that rate and apply it to the rest of the video, getting times that are wildly inaccurate. Actually playing the file in question (this phenomenon can happen to audio files, too) will show you the actual length.
