How do websites such as vimeo stay in business when directly competing with massive giants like YouTube?

Same way that BMW stays in business competing with Toyota. Different market segments looking for different qualities. Vimeo’s model leans more toward paid accounts for users who post and share videos vs. free accounts with ads, but in return there is a better quality stream and more control of experience when doing things like embedding on own website.

Because in a way they aren’t directly competing. Vimeo provides a very similar service to YouTube but it’s target market (Despite some overlap) is not the same, therefore they still have users providing revenue and hopefully profit.
