It is all about the numbers. The more symmetric a face is the more beautiful it is perceived. You can look up scientific studies over it. The perfect face is symmetrical and uses “The Golden Ratio” which measures the length of nose and position of the eyes, etc. This does vary over cultures, but face symmetry remains a constant.

First symmetry and adherence to the golden ratio between features. It is something our brain processes inherently. There is a “mask” that someone created. It’s a series of lines and when placed over a face the closer the features come to fitting within those lines the more attractive they are seen to be.

Then of course cultural ideas are layer on top of that.

Adding a question on top of that…after time why might one think their intimate partner’s face is more attractive?

A lot of people are talking about symmetry and golden ratio. Go look at pictures of good looking people. Preferably not celebrities. You will quickly figure out that the truth is a lot more complicated then that. Lots of people have symmetry and ratios without being attractive. A lot of attractive people don’t have high symmetry etc, you get the idea.

There is a combination of nature and nurture at play. Some of what we find attractive is dictated by our gene’s. Some of it has to do with prior experiences. There is a lot of disagreement on how much nature determines and how much of it is nurture. One thing everyone agrees on is that both play a role.
