We don’t super duper know, but its likely that they’re seeking out the point where there is the highest concentration or progesterone, a female sex hormone. As to how and why that happens, one theory is that a protein found abundantly in the tail of the sperm responds to it, directing then like a little sperm rudder.
Which I suppose make sense, because this whole thing is species specific. Sperm from one species don’t seem to be attracted to eggs of different species. Not that they could fertilize the eggs anyway.
So no future cat-dogs, fortunately.
