How do some radios know the name and artist of the song that’s playing?

Along with the signal that carries the music, some radio stations broadcast a signal through the RDS protocol (the Radio Data System.) Usually the signal is the station ID, plus the artist and the song. If your radio can interpret the RDS protocol, it will display that information. It’s more common in newer radios, especially in cars.
