Gasoline cars release a ton of carbon monoxide in the exhaust. If that exhaust happens to get into the car somehow, like sitting in an enclosed garage or an exhaust leak, you can breathe in enough to be poisoned.

If you are in a space without much air movement, or your car has an exhaust leak you are essentially just breathing in the exhaust fumes from your car. Cars are far from airtight so the exhaust gasses will eventually get into the car if there is nothing washing it away.
