How do parking machines read a validation stamp and know not to charge you?

I would guess that the stamps are provided by the company and programmed into the machine. Using technology more primitive than facial recognition software, when the machine recognizes one of these symbols, it applies a ‘0’ in the calculation of time x $ or it overrides calculation to open the gate.
