How do locks and keys work?

I recently saw a gif that showed how a key worked with the tumblers, and thought it was pretty cool! Though I’m not sure how the key turning unlocks a door, can anyone explain? Thank you!

So, the actual turning of the lock will usually be connected to a mechanism that allows the object the lock is attached to to open. The simplest example of this is a [cam lock](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71-k-RCN9rL._AC_SX355_.jpg) which has a metal extrusion that will sit in place behind the door frame of a cabinet, and prevent the cabinet door from opening outwards.
