In pretty much all cases, the solid parts of the pill dissolve in your stomach. Typically, one form of pill is chosen over another for the sake of easy consumption (solid pills tend to be harder to swallow) or for the sake of release characteristics. If the medicine has to be a liquid, then it cannot be a solid pill. Some medicines are also meant to be slow-release (such as painkillers and some psychiatric medications) and slow-release medicines cannot be liquid. Sometimes these come in the form of solid pills, and other times they come in gel caps full of smaller grains that are released when the cap dissolves.
