How did scientist figure out what percentage of the total oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the ocean?

I have read technical papers that claim the percentage 70% and others that claim 90%. I guess the answer is that they really don’t have the exact value, but they can grow plants, small trees, and plankton in a lab and obtain enough data to make reasonable estimates.

When I use O2 concentration meters in various locations (forest, desert, oceanside, mountains, …….) you can see the O2 concentration change as expected (when the relative humidity is taken out of the mix).
