How come we have to always deplete the energy of a phone battery or power bank when we first buy it and only then do we charge it?

It doesn’t matter anymore, but with old batteries having a charge constantly run across the electrolyte would make it more efficient in the long run by distributing charges more evenly

You don’t, and should not do this with lithium ion batteries. NiCd and NiMh batteries may need this to keep the batteries healthy, but not with Lithium-Ion. In fact, it’s best to keep them within 20-80% charge, and not let them fully discharge or charge.

This may have been true for old phone batteries but now its not necessary, you can charge your smartphone/powerband whenever you want. Your device’s lithium-ion battery doesn’t care if it’s at 10% or 80% capacity; it will charge just fine without destroying your device’s longevity.
