How come sometimes scars hurt and other times, it’s numb?

I have multiple scars that are of different sizes and in different spots on my body. Sometimes they are completely numb and sometimes they actually hurt. It feels like it changes on a whim. Can someone explain?

The nerves in that area are where the pain comes from. If the nerves were killed completely it will be numb. If they were damaged but not killed, it could make them more sensitive anywhere from having a lower pain tolerance all the way up to chronic, permanent lifelong pain.

likely due to nerve damage if they deep enough. Maybe they haven’t healed properly, I know my broken knuckle hasn’t healed, most times it’s just nothing but sometimes it feels like it is freshly injured out of nowhere. Slight irritation may cause inflammation or nerve response. Could be an underlying disease. If it’s really bad you should have a doctor check it out. But just like most injuries, they’ll come back to haunt you as the years go by. Fucked up neck surfing some extremely heavy waves, someone fell on top of my neck. 8 years later i still have spurts of pain. it’s muscular i believe but still it never was the same
