They don’t detect how many drinks you have had, or what particular kind of alcohol you’ve consumed. When you drink an alcoholic beverage, the alcohol makes its way into your bloodstream. Just as carbon dioxide is passed from your bloodstream to the air in your lungs, so too is the alcohol in your blood. When you exhale, a small yet detectable amount of alcohol also exits your lungs. The more alcohol that’s in your system, the more alcohol you exhale.
