How 3D holograms work?

A super broad question because theres many possible answers. But the one i think you’re looking for probably is: Projection.

That’s the answer. Projection.

Draw a cube on a piece of paper. It looks 3d, doesnt it? But its 2d. Because its drawn. You know its 2d. But it looks 3d, because it has shapes that suggest it being 3d, and your brain interprets it as 3d.

Now draw same cube, slightly turned. Its still 2d, and it still appears 3d to your brain.

A 3d hologram is essentially a very quick (24fps+) drawing of 2d objects that have 3d look, making your brain think you are seeing 3d stuff. You can achieve this via many ways – thinness/thickness of lines, brightness and contrast (things further away are less bright), depth of field, etc.
