Unlike those big machines, water jets don’t heat things up like machines can, so it’s an option to cut materials without the added heat and friction. Even laser cutting can be replaced with water jet cutting.
It works by dipping your material in a pool with a jet that shoots water at it. The one I was asking about shot at approximately 40,000 PSI, our project was to cut heat treated metal without removing the heat treatment and it was much faster than any machine would’ve been!
