ELi5: Workout Calories & ‘After Burn’ is it a thing?

Dear Fitness Reddit .. I’m confused , I’m not sure if it’s me getting hung up on calories but ‘after burn’ has got me all confused , can someone explain it to me. It may also be I have too many data sources and all conflict. Here’s the question .

Is ‘after burn’ a thing after working out , if so what % is it .

If we use this mornings cardio, I targeted 500 calories in about 30 minutes effort ranged from 75 to 85% of Max heart rate (I’m 46).

My Apple Watch says active calories 500 , total calories 630

I from time to time use a MyZone heart rate monitor so I can see on the big screen a effort / heart rate and calories and this just shows 500 calories. It doesn’t take into account any ‘after burn’.

Finally I’ve read that others estimate it’s another 50% and others say in the following hour it’s 100% if your workout burn.

So 1 x ‘500 calorie’ target gives me figures ranging from 500 to 1000 .. Can someone this to me .

Many thanks

The basic concept is that when you work out, your body cranks into high gear. It burns more calories to fuel your muscles and such.

Your body doesn’t immediately go back to normal as soon as you’re done on the treadmill though. Your cells are still working extra after the work out is done.

The more intense your workout, the longer it takes for your body to return to a resting state and the longer yiu burn more calories.

Its hard to give a precise number because everyones a little different and your workout is different. So there are a lot of factors to consider.
