ELI5. Why is it that some Bluetooth speakers connect to a phone that’s farther away than the ones closest to it?

Bluetooth speakers connect to whatever device they think they are expected to connect to. This has nothing to do with range. Typically, it’s just whatever they’ve connected to most recently.
