They could use aluminum cans that are better for the planet and we already have a great recycling system in place but they choose to use plastic?

Plastic is cheap. 500ml PET water bottle costs something like 5-6 cents… a can can cost 25-30

Aluminium is not ‘better’ for the environment, but then neither is plastic. They both have environmental costs. Often the overall costs for plastics are deemed to be lower, though it depends how important each individual cost is rated, and which are actually measured.

Usually such decisions are made based on financial cost though.

What is wrong with glass? I love glass for water. I mostly buy drinks in glass. Easiest to recycle, sustainable, does not have cancer inducing properties, nor add pollution to the planet. Drinks costs about the same here. Yes a bit heavier and may break, but simple, natural, so much better in every other way. Tastes better to me.

While aluminium cans are cool, as lightweight, more easily recyclable than plastic, but… aluminium cans do have clear plastic liners.
