Eli5: why does audio have such a big impact on our mood?

There’s something wrong with my bluetooth speaker which makes the audio falter. And although I rarily get angry , the broken rhythm of the audio makes me want to throw my speaker and phone out the window in rage after like 5 seconds.

There was a recent post on Reddit where someone explained that this is why computers can freeze but the audio will keep playing. Apparently there is always some spare CPU to avoid interrupted audio because people can’t deal with that.

Similarly, music seems to have a direct impact on our mood.

So why does our sense of hearing seem to impact our mood so much?

It doesn’t really. Psychologically, we like to look for and process messages that are congruent with our mood. So if you’re in a bad mood, you look for negative messages (if you’re sad you listen to sad music and so on). If you’re actively looking to change that mood, music can be one of the many ways to do that, just like you can force yourself to think of a happy memory in order to reduce your sadness. We can also distort how we process something depending on how we feel.

Regarding the first part of your question, i don’t think it’s the audio part that’s important. The distorted sound/rhythm just becomes a an aversive stimulus, something you don’t like and try to avoid, and it provokes in you those emotional reactions. Like the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

I get mad REALLY fast when i work with a mouse that has different settings than mine. Perhaps is because the expectation are different from the results and and this creates a “micro-anger” and then when it is repeated again in a short period of time these cumulates and you become angrier.
