Eli5: Why do humans need / have earwax?

It’s the same reason why we produce boogers (aka mucous). Earwax catches particles, parasites, microbes, etc and prevents them from entering into the ear. It’s the first line of defense basically.
As I understand it, and I’m not a doctor, ear wax is your ear’s way of keeping itself clean. The ear canal will gather dust and hair and dandruff and stuff over time. So the ear was is suppose to be created and keep moving outwards so kinda sweep all that stuff away.
I also understand it’s suppose to help as a deterrent for getting bugs in your ear.
