[ELI5] What is the Matrix theory? Is that proven and real?

I’m not sure what you are getting at. I think you are referring to “Simulation Theory”, as in we are living in a simulation of the real world like the movie “The Matrix”.
The theory came about from tech industry as it seems like in the near future we will be able to do something similar with our own technology. If our own consciousness is just a result of the chemistry of our brain, that means consciousness can be written like a mathematical equation. Computers could calculate that equation and then be “conscious”. Put 1000s of similar computers doing the same thing together and you now have a simulated civilization. Put millions or billions of similar computers together and you can simulate the entire universe. If the simulation gets complicated enough you couldn’t tell the difference between it and the real thing. If we can do this on a smaller scale, who is to say that some other way way more advanced civilization has already done that to us?
The problem with this theory is that it is impossible to disprove. It’s not scientific. It’s basically religion, as a civilization advanced enough to create a simulation like that would be indistinguishable from God.
