ELi5: If you look into a mirror at a reflection of something far away, are you looking far away or nearby?

Faraway. The only reason I know this is because in eye clinics when they don’t have a 6 miter distance to evaluate your eye sight on the chart, they put the chart at 3 miters and use a mirror.

Your eyes focus on the virtual image ‘through’ the mirror so you’re looking far away.

You can actively focus your eyes on the glass of the mirror which blues the surroundings and is how you look nearby in the case of your question.

* You are looking far away.
* Think about the distance the light has to travel for it to get into your eye balls.
* It has to travel the distance from the object to the mirror, and the distance from the mirror to your eye balls.
* Now it’s easy to see that is much farther away than the distance from just the mirror to your eye balls.
