Eli5: If Earth was just a tad bit closer/further from the Sun, would we burn/freeze?

I’m thinking about 1 mile away or closer to the sun.

No. The earth already has an elliptical orbit and its distance varies by far far greater amounts than 1 mile. On average the earth varies by about 3 millions miles over the course of its orbit with the closest point being in early january and its furthest point being mid july.

One mile away wouldn’t make any significant difference. There would be a difference inherently as the Earth would be receiving more/less radiation, but since the Earth is +- 90 million miles from the Sun, 1 mile wouldn’t impact our lives all that much.

For comparison,

> It is estimated that the Sun has become 30% brighter in the last 4.5 billion years.[125] At present, it is increasing in brightness by about 1% every 100 million years.[126]

A 1% change in luminosity would be equivalent to a change in distance of about 0.5%, or about 700,000 km.
Counterbalancing that, the greenhouse effect was *much* greater 100 million years ago.
