Eli5, how is it that people can hear so well when are ears are full of wax?

“So well” is a bit subjective. Some people can’t hear very well at all, because of all the wax, and they don’t realize it until they get it removed. Then they say “Oh wow, I can hear so much better now”.

Ears aren’t normally full of wax. The sides of the canal leading to the eardrum is just coated with it to trap dirt. If overproduction, often as a result of infection, fills the canal with wax heating certainly does deteriorate and it often has to be washed out.
