ELi5: How do probiotics work?

Looking over labels on kombucha, I see that it only lists L. bacillis as a present microbe. This confuses me because isn’t the point to have a more balanced and varietied microbiome in your gut? How does adding an entire bottle of just one microbe help diversify the gut flora?

It doesn’t necessarily help diversify by introduction. But large presence of good stuff of any type can help keep the bad stuff in check which will allow all the good stuff to flourish thus allowing it to diversify on its own. But there are lots of other probiotics besides kombucha that offer more strains of stuff.
