There’s basically a valve between your throat and stomach, and your swallow reflex moves food towards your stomach…you don’t have a way to “swallow up.”

During normal eating, you swallow to push food down your esophagus through valve (“esophageal sphincter”) into your stomach and there is stays. If you do a handstand the food sits on your esophageal sphincter but it doesn’t open to let anything out.

Overcoming all this stuff is why vomitting is so much more violent a process than swallowing…your stomach has to contract hard enough for force food out through your esophageal sphincter and up the whole length of your throat without any help from your swallowing muscles.

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a bundle of muscles at the low end of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach. When the LES is closed, it prevents acid and stomach contents from traveling backwards from the stomach. It has been known to get damaged, particularly from chronic heartburn, a weak or damaged one causes the medical condition known as GERD.
