Eli5- Does the carbonation in “soda water” effect the body differently than drinking regular water. Ie, the benefits from drinking water whether carbonated or not?

I have read somewhere (but I am not an expert so correct me if I’m wrong) that the carbonic acid in seltzer can be mildly bad for your teeth, but not nearly as bad as soda. It might be neutralized though by the alkaline stuff they add to some bubbly water.

The only thing I’ve heard of it being bad, and I’m not sure it’s true, but apparently the gas can expand your stomach over time. I’ve heard people who have had gastric surgeries aren’t supposed to drink carbonation afterwards because of this. All I drink is seltzer though, so I’m with you.

Not really. It just puts air in your stomach, which will come out of either end eventually. If that’s what you want then maybe it could be helpful but it’s literally just water with a gas you can’t digest inside
