Does my phone connect with the GPS satellites or through another system? How does GPS handle so many pings?

GPS doesn’t communicate with your phone.

GPS satellites basically scream what time it is, and your phone listens. If your phone knows which satellite it heard and where it’s supposed to be, and combines that with several other “screams” it can do some cool math to figure out where you are based on the time differences between the several satellites it heard

Your phone doesn’t connect to the satellites. Your phone receives a signal from the GPS satellites, it then calculates your position. Basically it works by measuring the time it took from the satellite to your phone, if you have that data from several satellites you can calculate your position.

GPS is normally a one way system.

It works like radio in that you phone or sat-nav device only acts as a receiver.

All the satellites do is broadcast where and when they are and your device just does the math based on that to figure out where it is by comparing different signals.

The satellite does not know if any received the messages it is broadcasting.
