Do movie directors write the story that have on their mind, or do they get someone to write it for them?

Both. And another, more common occurence: money decides who writes, who directs, who stars, and all of it is subject to change at any given moment.

The director and writer are 2 completely different jobs with different roles in the film making process. Sometimes, filmmakers will write *and* direct their own films, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Directors direct and writers write. The director can ad lib small things but script rewrites need to go through the writers first. Sometimes there’s a writer on set that will change things or sign off on changes. I guess a director could also have written the story too but more commonly the just direct.

Hello!

It all starts with a screenplay.

But that’s not true. Sometimes a producer or a director will work with a screenwriter to record the director’s vision. They are presumably the richer ones. Movies get changed during production for various reasons.
