colour match foundation/face products, how does it work?

I recently got a sample of a BB Gel that colour matches to your skin tone. Before the product is rubbed in/applied to your face, it is a greyish colour with little grains in it, but once you rub it in, the grains disappear and it changes colour to match your skin tone.

Can someone explain how it turns from the grey colour to matching my skin tone almost perfectly?

There’s a few different things that could be going on. Some companies use pigment capsules that burst when applied and release the different tones and some formulas use chemicals that change colour with the skin’s pH. It’s not really good at adjusting to specific skin tones and it’s sorta just like a mood ring effect but because bb creams are so sheer it’s hard to tell.
