How does it work?

You build your system from individuals, and model the time evolution of the system be allowing the individuals to change and interact with each other and the environment. This is contrasted from things like differential models, in which you have a few variables that describe the state of your system (e.g. number of individuals) and describe their time evolution by a differential equation. The techniques used on them and the results gained are very different, which is why we separate them, though both have a lot of internal variation.
