When my husband, Benjamin M. Kaplow, was enlisted in the army at 18 years June 26, 1943, little did imagine that his many letters would be descriptive become a part of WWII history. I am proud to say that I have many letters to and from his months of training before being sent out to the European front, and his Experience in countries which had served.

His letters are innocent to begin with, some humorous (about a raid), some poignant (when he turns 20. Old and even in Europe), I just read in a romance developing with a czech girl (I felt a pang of jealousy), letters from war-torn country, prisoners surrendered in motion with respect to the eye, the night a pregnant girl gave birth at home have taken over (the doctor said he always wanted to deliver a child), the ambush would never forget. Wrote about topics that bring the reader into his world of a young soldier. The letters sent by Airmail page, V-Mail, and even caught one on German Chancellor, letters, all in his beautiful handwriting, were lovingly saved from his family and returned to him when we married in 1954.

A nice Jewish boy in those precious letters asking herring, sardines, Fanny Farmer Candy, soup, Campbell's, Tootsie Rolls, as well as articles clothing for protection from the frigid weather. He felt sorry for other soldiers who were sent only spam. He also thanked his brother for the pipe sent (apparently pre-smoked taste to do it right.) One can only imagine how his family on the home front has been carefully packaging and sending any he asked, not knowing if it happened across the ocean and find their way to Ben in Yankee Army's 3rd division as they competed for the battle the Ardennes.

I have not read all the letters stored in a box under the desk, and now, unfortunately, I can not question him about their contents. Yet they are my hours to reflect the atrocities he experienced. Like many returning soldiers, rarely spoke of the war. Ben was awarded the Bronze Star for courage under fire. These letters are a testament to his strong family ties, and was known for his gentle manner, which, not surprisingly, really captured my heart.

Ben died March 23, 2007 at the age of 82. We have been married 53 years (the tears come easily). Although I miss Ben so much, I find his letters allow me to reflect on his younger years, before I knew him, and be grateful for his love throughout our marriage.

Remembering WW II Remembering WW II

Henry Lasoski, an officer in the Polish army, was there on the first day of World War II, thrusting his bayonet awkwardly into a German soldier hours after Hitler's army invaded his homeland in 1939. And Jacques Smith was there on the last, a member of the honor guard aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese signed the documents of surrender in 1945. From start to finish, this chronicle of fifty-three personal testimonies illuminates the Second World War in a way no mere accumulation of facts can.In a journalistic tour de force, Elizabeth Mullener found eyewitnesses to virtually every major event of World War II, and she found them all in one American city -- New Orleans. The people she writes about are not grand heroes or prime movers. They are young men shaking in their foxholes, young women stitching up wounded soldiers, and children facing a world gone topsy-turvy.And they saw it all. They witnessed the London Blitz and the siege of Stalingrad; the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Bataan Death March; the battle of Iwo Jima and the Nuremberg trials; the Normandy invasion and parties at the USO. Their memories are powerful. Harold Eck recalls sharks grazing his legs as he treaded water for four days after the USS Indianapolis sank in the Pacific Ocean. Anthony DeLucca saw bodies stacked like cordwood at Buchenwald. Christine Strevinsky slid a knife through the neck of a Nazi commandant at the age of nine. Frank Rosato played The Missouri Waltz for Harry Truman at Potsdam. All poignantly related through Mullener's graceful and compelling prose, the episodes in War Stories provide an unusually intimate history of World War II and a direct, visceral connection tothe central event of the twentieth century.

The Young Ones: American Airmen of WW II The Young Ones: American Airmen of WW II
$31.44

The Young Ones is a collection of stories from the wartime experiences of some of the American airmen who served in Europe and the Pacific during WW II. The stories are narrated by the airmen or submitted by relatives, and recount missions over enemy territory, encounters with enemy fighters, struggles to control battle damaged planes, crash landings, and bail out from exploding planes, often leaving behind dead and wounded buddies. Many airmen who survived these experiences were captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs. They were often brutally treated by their captors. However, some airmen managed to evade captivity and escaped. Some were on the run for months throughout Europe, some hiding for almost a year until war's end. Thousands of POWs in Germany were on the forced marches in the beginning of 1945, the Death Marches. Their suffering on these marches is painfully retold on some of these pages. These are the stories of some American airmen who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, most of them only 19 or 20 years of age. These are the stories of The Young Ones.
