When my husband, Benjamin M. Kaplow, was enlisted in the army at 18 years June 26, 1943, little did imagine that his many letters would be descriptive become a part of WWII history. I am proud to say that I have many letters to and from his months of training before being sent out to the European front, and his Experience in countries which had served.
His letters are innocent to begin with, some humorous (about a raid), some poignant (when he turns 20. Old and even in Europe), I just read in a romance developing with a czech girl (I felt a pang of jealousy), letters from war-torn country, prisoners surrendered in motion with respect to the eye, the night a pregnant girl gave birth at home have taken over (the doctor said he always wanted to deliver a child), the ambush would never forget. Wrote about topics that bring the reader into his world of a young soldier. The letters sent by Airmail page, V-Mail, and even caught one on German Chancellor, letters, all in his beautiful handwriting, were lovingly saved from his family and returned to him when we married in 1954.
A nice Jewish boy in those precious letters asking herring, sardines, Fanny Farmer Candy, soup, Campbell's, Tootsie Rolls, as well as articles clothing for protection from the frigid weather. He felt sorry for other soldiers who were sent only spam. He also thanked his brother for the pipe sent (apparently pre-smoked taste to do it right.) One can only imagine how his family on the home front has been carefully packaging and sending any he asked, not knowing if it happened across the ocean and find their way to Ben in Yankee Army's 3rd division as they competed for the battle the Ardennes.
I have not read all the letters stored in a box under the desk, and now, unfortunately, I can not question him about their contents. Yet they are my hours to reflect the atrocities he experienced. Like many returning soldiers, rarely spoke of the war. Ben was awarded the Bronze Star for courage under fire. These letters are a testament to his strong family ties, and was known for his gentle manner, which, not surprisingly, really captured my heart.
Ben died March 23, 2007 at the age of 82. We have been married 53 years (the tears come easily). Although I miss Ben so much, I find his letters allow me to reflect on his younger years, before I knew him, and be grateful for his love throughout our marriage.

WW II 60th Anniversary Commemorative Box Set (DVD)
$42.63 GUNS OF NAVARONE: One of the greatest war movies of all time, with an all-star cast and a gripping plot based on Alistair MacLean`s novel. A commando team is sent to a Greek island to destroy the giant guns of World War II Germany, which are controlling a strategic channel in the Aegean Sea. This was a groundbreaker in the special effects department. Academy Award Nominations: 7, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Academy Awards: Best Special Effects.FROM HERE TO ETERNITY: With skill and grace, an all-star cast brought to the screen what was considered an unfilmable novel, the story of the loves, hopes and dreams of those in a close-knit army barracks in Hawaii shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Montgomery Clift portrays a former boxer who refuses to fight after blinding a friend in the ring and is sent to this remote outpost as punishment for his insubordination. Love and tragedy combine in this unflattering look at life in the American military before the war. Based on the novel by James Jones.THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI: One of the all-time great war films, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is yet another classic from the marvelous David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO). The film is an outstanding and psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle`s 1952 novel about English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American intelligence officers conspire to blow up the structure, but Col. Nicholson (a fabulous Alec Guinness), the commander who supervised the bridge`s construction, has acquired a sense of pride in his creation and tries to foil their plans. The climax is one of the great finales in film history. Although credited to screenwriter Carl Foreman, the script was actually written by blacklisted writer Michael Wilson. The film garnered seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Guinness). |

Various Artists - Songs That Got Us Through WW II Vol. 2
$18.5 Includes liner notes by Billy Vera.Songs That Got Us Through WW2, Vol. 2 collects more early-`40s pop favorites like Dinah Shore`s "You`d Be So Nice to Come Home To," Roy Rogers` "San Fernando Valley," and Johnny Mercer`s "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe." More overtly war-themed songs such as Buddy Johnson & His Orchestra`s "When My Man Comes Home," Louis Jordan`s "Ration Blues," and Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra`s "Flying Home" provide reflections -- some humorous, some poignant -- of wartime life at home and "over there," while the Pied Pipers` "Mairzy Doats," Woddy Herman`s "Caldonia," and other whimsical songs offer some well-deserved escapism. Marlene Dietrich`s "Lili Marlene," Billy Holiday`s "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)," and Bing Crosby`s "Is You Is or Is You Ain`t My Baby?" are among the other highlights of this nostalgic collection. ~ Heather Phares Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
