What you need to make your own hiking sticks hand-carved? A pocket knife and a walk in the woods. Make sure your knife is solidly constructed. You do not need more than a three-inch blade, but needs to be strong enough not to step on you when you press a knot in the wood. A block is a good blade idea even if the value of your fingers.

What type of wood should I use? Any kind you want, but be aware of differences. Many people like hiking sticks hardwood, because it can be very beautiful once polished up. This is fine if you do not mind the extra work necessary to carve hardwoods. Also be aware of whether they are heavy, better suited for the decoration of the cabin for use on long trips.

One of my favorite trees for carved hiking sticks is poplar. E 'la luce, and one of the easiest woods to work with. Young poplars often grow into crowded stands, so cutting of a couple not the evil forest. If you size in spring or early summer, you can almost peel the bark off hand.

Northern White Cedar is a much tougher wood to carve, but it is beautiful, straight, and one of the lighter. In a cedar swamp, you can find many dead young cedars that have not begun to decompose. Cedar lasts forever, it seems, even when used untreated as fence posts.

Making Your Carved Hiking Stick

What happens if I do not know your trees? Find a straight young tree in any area that could use thinning and cut. A short is seen easy way to cut your stick. Otherwise, you can use the knife, by cutting deeper and deeper in a circle around the tree until you can snap it off. Cut the piece a little 'more than they want that your finished hiking stick.

How long should it be? A general rule is to have the hiking stick come up to just below the armpit. This is a personal thing though. If you want a fantasy seven foot staff, go for it.

Cut away from yourself, removing all the bark. Narrow the bottom, but not a strong point. You can leave the top flat, round on, or even carve a spiral design into it. Use your imagination is. Almost every piece of sandpaper can be used to adjust, and can apply stain or a poly acrylic finish if you like, or leave natural.

If you start with the wood Green is better to let it dry for at least several weeks. Carving while green can be easier, but often twist or bend then as it dries. One could avoid this that binds to something straight to dry. Each wood is somewhat 'different, such as cuts and Drys.

I wrap the end with leather (with a small nail to hold it) to keep the stick from splitting. I also put a knob usually on it. This can be a piece of cloth or leather. Glue or glue on and staple it. You can also drill a hole through the stick at the top, to add a wrist strap.

Be creative. Use a wood burner to add to your artwork hiking stick. Drill a hole at the top and glue the glass ball in it. Mark inches on it, so you can measure it. Some of my best sellers pewter animals had nailed to them. Experimentation is one of the best parts of making your own carved hiking stick.

Tiger Forest $16.58 The single narrow track cuts through a gap in the mountain range that has towered above you since leaving the shantytown of Sawai Madhopur in the cover of darkness. During the journey, night quickly becomes day, and with the onset of another cold dawn comes an almost palpable air of expectancy. Sheer cliffs faces loom over on your passage through an ancient stone gate carved deep into the rocks. The road then rises sharply, you travel upwards for a time, before it eventually levels off. Emerging from the forest you are greeted with an expansive panorama. Jungle stretches as far as the eye can see, mountains rise into the sky and the centrepiece of this spectacular landscape, a magnificent fortress, sits atop a huge rock. A stone sentinel overlooking the wilderness, as it has done at day-break for a thousand years. Suddenly the road dips; with the wind rushing through your hair and the fresh forest air filling your lungs, you enter the National Park of Ranthambhore, the best place in the world to watch wild tigers. I have had the good fortune of undertaking that same journey many times since glimpsing my first wild tiger here in December 1998. I was at the time a 21 year-old photography student seeking adventure and enlightenment; Ranthambhore was to exceed all of my expectations. Those early days were some of the most exciting of my life. Spellbound I watched and photographed tigers stalking, walking in broad daylight along roads, killing prey and even turning up unannounced on the edge of cliffs. I was back just a couple of months later and over the years I've returned as often as possible, documenting the lives of several tigers and photographing the forest and all of its inhabitants.This visual study is the result of those glorious times. In it I aim to celebrate the wonders of this tiger forest, in the process shedding some light on the lives of the animals that live in harmony with the tiger in this unique Indian wilderness. Ranthambhore is one of the world's great National Parks. A veritable fantasy-forest where wild tigers roam around the remnants of a forgotten kingdom, amongst the souls of vanquished warriors. Its magic has seduced many over time and if you the viewer can feel just a little of that magic in my imagery then I will have accomplished my objectives with this book.
