I've seen people refurbishing of old cast iron stoves sanding the rust off, paint and then put back in use. I'd like to get the rust off an old iron and a few other items, but wonder if they had a value, if this had any value lower sale.

Generally speaking, unless done very aggressive, media blasting something in pig iron can damage it. That said, there are other ways to attack the rust: Naval Jelly (phosphoric acid) and the conversion of oxide electrolyte (what a pro would use a restorer economic value).
