Silver City, New Mexico has grown to a bustling town because of the discovery of gold and silver in 1870. One of its most famous citizens was Billy the Kid. We know its reputation by Pat Garrett of the book "The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid." Pat Garrett was the sheriff who killed Billy. Billy, I think, was much maligned. He moved to Silver City, as a boy in 1873 with his mother and stepfather William Antrim. Billy's mother was sick with tuberculosis and died in 1874. Billy's step-dad has spent most of his time mining gold and silver. So Billy was left alone with his younger brother. Like any rebel without a boyfriend, has been in some small problems with theft. Sheriff Whitehill wanted to teach him and fear him a lesson. Has put in prison. Billy escaped by climbing the chimney. He was very thin, weighing only seventy-five pounds and was constantly bullied. This came to head at the age of seventeen years, the recovery of a blacksmith, who was harassing him in an Arizona bar. Billy returned to New Mexico and was captured in Range of Lincoln County Wars. Here is his legend grew.

Silver City is also famous for its Ditch Park. This is the main street of the city and was carved by a series of floods from 1895-1906. The Silver City Museum has pictures of the devastation caused by this flooding. The museum is housed in the former home of HB Ailman, who made his fortune in gold and lost from a bank. (Hmm!) There were no bailouts in those days. The museum has permanent and rotating exhibitions. It has a vast library of research on Silver City and its mining history.

Above the hills of Western New Mexico University has a wonderful museum of the Fleming Hall end of the 10th Street Station. It houses a vast collection of Mimbres pottery and other artifacts. The designs of the ceramics are beautiful, depicting animals and geometric designs. Many of them have holes at the base of the bowl. The bowls were placed on top of the head of a deceased person and a hole was made. This was to allow the spirit of the deceased leave for the afterlife. N. photos were allowed inside the museum.

Sixty-five miles northwest of Silver City is the city of Glenwood, Butch Cassidy, who frequently visited. The important thing about the town is that it is the gateway to the National Recreation Trail bridge five miles east on 174.The walkway runs along the Whitewater Canyon. miners erected in 1893 to process gold ore and silver three miles into the canyon. The construction of a water pipeline be delivered in the canyon to the base of the mill where it was. At first four-inch pipes were adequate. Later, when a large generator was installed, eighteen-inch pipes were installed. Some of these are still visible today, along with some of the rigging for the oil pipeline.

The area is called the catwalk, because the men were on foot tubes, like the cats to do the maintenance. The CCC workers built in 1930 and today walkway path. The route is 1.1 miles long and takes between one and one and a half hours to make the return trip. The first half mile is open with a 0 to 10% grade. After that increases with the degree many steps and bridges. The height above sea level varies from 4923 feet to 5234 in the parking lot at the end of the trail. This has no effect in four or five times the trail goes to the water and salt to thirty forty meters. Little children were able to take the path along with the elderly like me. To do along the way Aldo Leopold is the picnic area, twenty miles to Silver City. There are fine views of the Gila National Wilderness, which has helped to establish.

The next day we went beyond the Gila (pronounced Ha la) Mountains of Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. We took Rte 15, Pinos Altos over the Continental Divide and into the Gila National Forest. DO NOT, under any circumstances, pull a RV on this road. The road is at best cases a lane and a half at the central level, with no lines. There are more speed on a crowded dance club on a Saturday night. We white knuckled the entire eighteen miles. The points of view, when I saw were spectacular. After the road turns meets rte 35 and becomes more manageable.
At the end of the road are the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, built forty buildings within seven caves 180 feet above the floor of the stream.

The guide, given daily at noon during the season winter, explained that these were more likely ceremonial rooms and gathering places for the Mogollon (pronounced Yon and Muggia) around 1270, during a period of severe drought. There are some pictographs in a cave. According astro-historical one for the Pleiades points during the summer solstice.

A cave was used for preparation food: nuts are hulled and ground and maize and beans in preparation. The Mogollon people were two hunter-gatherers and farmers planting three sisters: corn, beans and pumpkin.

The next cave was the kitchen, which form holes in the rock. Stones are heated and placed in these holes. Then the food was put into play bowls and heated over the coals.

The third cave is very closed, but has a window reminiscent of the Anasazi culture. This window is the shape of a cross Tao. Nobody knows its purpose.

The fourth cave has the most buildings. Since there have been written and the site has been stripped of most of the artifacts archaeologists first arrived there, most of what is known is speculative. Most rooms seem to be used for various ceremonies. Some of them may have been homes for medicine clan who seek their visions and dreams. The cave is the largest of all and is quite impressive.

The National Monument is managed mainly by volunteers. Only the superintendent is paid. These volunteers are very friendly.

They spoke of pictographs to Lower Scorpion Campground, which was on the way back to the visitor center. There were three distinct rather than drawn with red paint.

The volunteers also said that the National Monument property was found an archaeological site, with over three hundred lay the foundations. These most likely were the houses of the Mogollon people, rather than the cliff dwellings, that would be quite indefensible.

We went back to Silver City via Rte 35 and 152. We, however, that it was a wonderful road 152 and there would be the days after going to Truth or consequences, New Mexico.

The 152 was passed by the Santa Rita copper mines near Bayard, New Mexico. It is open-cast mines, that stretch for miles. They are beautiful in their own way.

The next day we took with our 152 Rte trailer. It 'was a disaster waiting to happen, forty kilometers of winding roads, to be kept up to Emory Pass at over 8200 meters. It took five hours of time for us to go fifty miles and almost lost a transmission. Are happy that we have a transmission thermometer. You saved the day.

Choose the number of bowls of the most important issue to face most bowlers when play will start the game.
Yet, judging by the number people I see while coaching and also my trip, I estimate that between thirty and forty percent of them are using the wrong-sized bowls.
The popular method for determining size bowls was to have the bowler span the bowl with about half of the fingers and thumb of each hand. If your fingers and thumbs meet only about the surface rolling the bowl is supposed to be the right size. This theory may work in some cases, but is misleading for many people.
I believe that the only way to find the right size is to swing a number of different size bowls in hand. With a new player, I would place a bowl in the hand and fingers to adjust the correct grip that felt comfortable for the reader.
Then I would ask the player to rotate the hand to the point on the backswing. If the player feels the bowl can be silent, then, of course, is too large. If the bowl can be managed with ease, a larger size could be tried. Using this method, the reader is able to determine the larger bowl that could be used efficiently and comfortably.
The next decision is whether to use a heavy weight or average weight of a bowl. In the United Kingdom, a large number of bowlers actually own two sets of bowls. They may use a pressure, a surface on the fastest indoor and then switch to a weight average slow outdoor areas.
Many other players, including myself, use a strong weight bowl on both the internal and external surfaces. The heavy weight bowl certainly its advantages in a fast green outdoors on a windy day as they are less likely to be affected by a gusty crosswind. The heavy bowl can move a lighter bowl more easily in the head.
The final decision whether to play with a high average weight of weight or a bowl will probably comfort in your hand and the portfolio may stretch to the purchase of two sets.
Often players in clubs argue the merits of a bowls against another manufacturer. The company of all the bowls produce a variety of models and all manufactured to a high standard. The choice of a particular model will depend on what suits you best - whether you intend to play indoor and outdoors or if you want a bowl, in particular for a faster indoor greens.
Although many club bowlers do see the star players perform well on TV and often the same patterns of purchase of their favorite players.
These are some of the bowls provided by different companies:
Hensel has a wide range of models, including CLASSIC - traditionally the choice for outdoor bowlers in the United Kingdom. The bowl has a wide arch and 'hockey stick' finish and good, though open, can be a disadvantage on the fast indoor surface.
The Classic II is seen by many as the best running modern bowl. Designed to work straight with a less pronounced swing, it is ideal for UK indoor carpet. Many players use these bowls both inside and out.
The Tiger is the 'New Kid bloc 'and used by many players Hensel sponsored events on television. Greg Harlow and Ian Bond is World Bowls Tour ranking tournament win last season with this model of the bowl. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, this model is slightly larger than the polarization Classic II and is available only in heavy industry.
The DREAMLINE is quite new to these shores and is a close running fit fr surfaces bowl very fast, and certainly is not suitable outdoors in early May!
In ALMARK range, Hensel has three models - the STERLING GOLD for outdoor use, with a large bias; STERLING KING, a small bowl for your green faster, and STERLING SLIMLINE, a bowl with a more hands to go well, but suited for both codes.
Drakes PRIDE provides training, which has proven to be a bowl very popular in the United Kingdom. This cup is used for many bowlers, both internally and externally, and is ideal for those players who do not wish buy two sets. Many great players would agree that this bowl has proved versatile in all conditions and on different surfaces.
The advantage is a close bowl running and would be suitable for faster greens, preferably for the front-end for the players.
The Professional Plus is an open bowl, and could be similar to the Hensel Classic, and probably more suited to slow-air.
THOMAS TAYLOR also a wide choice of including its traditional bowl outdoors - the LIGNOID.
The ACE is probably his most popular bowl covered with a lot of bowlers and is used successfully by two times champion world indoor Andy Thomson. This is another dish that can also be used successfully outdoors.
The carrier has a narrower line and would be popular on fast surfaces, especially for front-end players, and the Lazer is a thin profile bowl with a narrow prejudices similar to Vector. The advantage of this bowl is that has been developed for the comfort in your hand for people with small hands.
The Legacy also has a thin profile, but unlike the laser has a wider arc and is considered a mid-bias bowl which could also be used externally. Taylor also produced the SPECTRUM and international, that are stronger than Ace to bias.
Many of these bowls are now available in many colors, as well as traditional black, and it would be best to check availability with your local dealer bowls, though always remember that at the time, colored bowls are available in heavy weight and the weight and size are published in most catalogs bowls.
This way you can check the difference in weight between the heavy weight and average weight bowls. My personal advice to any new bowler would be to select a bowl half prejudices that will be useful for most surfaces, for example Drakes Pride Professional, Classic II and Hensel Tiger Ace and Taylor would fall into this category.
As you gain experience, you may want to try a bowl running tight if you have a very fast indoor carpet. A word of warning - many consider bowlers that the tight bowling performance make the game easier, and believe they can practically straight bowl. This is not the case, as in many cases, weight control must be much better performance with a narrow bowl as there is little margin for error and required the implementation of the bowl does not bend with excessive weight.

There are few things more satisfying on a cold winter's day in a warming soup served in a large bowl. And what it comes to drinking tea from delicate china that makes us sit in the little po 'straighter?
