Newfoundland Northwest is a peninsula from Gros Morne Naitonal Park in the south to L'Anse aux Meadows on the north end. This as an area not to be missed.
Today we traveled to Gros Morne National Park. Our first step was, however, outside of Newfoundland insectarium Deer Lake. They have a garden of tropical butterflies and exhibitions worldwide for many insects. Some of them are huge. But the most dangerous to humans that seem to be as small as the mosquito.
Off to Gros Morne. We camped at Lomond River Campground, just outside the park. CA for $ 16.00, we received full Hookup. The camp in the park charges $ 29.00 per night for no services. This is rather steep. He traveled on foot along the Lomond River, a river of salmon. The salmon were not running, but the scenery was outstanding.

Off we went hiking today on one of the many trails of the park. We chose the Green Garden Trail. There are two versions: one long and one short. Of course we have chosen a short, just nine kilometers in length. We avoided the long hill to a path. But we have not missed the one that descends to the shore. What you need to go down, etc. The views were spectacular. The garden is known for its sea caves and sea stacks where the tide has ebbed. The hills are a challenge, but WOW! Neither words nor the pictures can do justice to the variety of beauty. Once again the weather was perfect. Rain is, however.

This morning it rained. In the afternoon the rain stopped and we were able to hike the Trail plateau. The Tablelands is an interesting phenomenon in Gros Morne. Millions of years ago, when the Appalachian Mountains were formed by a collision between the African and the North American continent, the Tablelands were disruptions of ocean. What are left are deposits of heavy metals such as nickel, iron, manganese, etc., that do not support most life. The rare plant life is found where the water coursing down sides of the mountain .. The province of Newfoundland plant, the pitcher plant, grows in abundance. It does not need nutrients from the soil. It receives its nourishment from insects set for their deaths in the interior of the plant-Yum, Yum! Audrey II, where are you? Visually, the area looks like an extract from the stripped region of the hills of slag and left as a reminder. This time, however, man is not responsible. The tops of the mountains are relatively flat, giving the name of The Tablelands. Across the road is the path to the green gardens, which is relatively rich in terms of growth. This path we took yesterday.
From the Tablelands we drove to Trout Lake, once a fjord. A delta format and attached to the fjord, making it an inland lake. Here the Tablelands place left, while the green cliffs rise to the right. The contrast of landscapes geology is stunning. Neither pictures nor words can adequately describe the beauty.
On the way back home, we stopped Discovery Center, which explains many of the unique features of this world famous park. The exhibitions have been realized with a sense of 'humor to take some of the stuffiness of unpronounceable names and geological ages in the development worldwide.

Another cloudy day. We wanted to take a trip on the fjord of Western Brook Pond. A pond is the name of Newfoundland, a lake. WB Pond was once a fjord filled with salt water. Over the years, his mouth full of debris and water is the only fresh snow from melt and rain. The water is almost pure, very little support life. This means that there is very little fish, little bacterial flora and life. After parking, we to walk almost an hour for the boat to land through a variety of coastal ecosystems: bogs, marshes, boreal forests, etc. Once we arrived at the pier with other 120 tourists, we were greeted with a deluge. Welcome to the fjords. A fjord is literally a finger dug into the mountains by glacial flow thousands of years for the implementation .. The walls mountains rise nearly 500 feet into the water to more than 2500 feet into the sky. Combined with the erosion from water and air, size of these monuments are in constant change. Rockfalls can occur at any time, and do.
The boat takes us through the entire length of the fjord, about 16 miles. Clouds, mist, fog, only occasional downpour and play with our senses as the canyon travel.
After two and a half hours back to the pier for the trip back. Each one was a buzz with the experience of the journey.
We headed north from the park and wisely stopped at Parson's Pond, which overlooks the bay of San Lorenzo. Almost immediately came a sea squall with rain and winds buffeting our trailer. We were happy to have a roof. When the rain ended that have been rewarded with a beautiful sunset and Afterglow, the best we have had from Sarasota, FL. We also learned here that the earth is really round. With our GPS in hand, we have tried to point our antenna dish to 22 degrees. Although there have been fifty feet over a cliff, we were not able to get a signal. For all members of the Flat Earth Society: "You are wrong."

Begin our journey to the north of the peninsula. Our first stop was the Arches, a natural phenomenon of four arches carved into a rock. Further, it is Daniel's Harbor, the home of Myra Bennett, the Florence Nightingale of the North. He ministered up and down the coast, as the only doctor around, providing More than 700 children, that the bones, perform surgery, and tended to by the general health of the population. The city was the news yesterday, with the funeral of modern medical that would have killed her child and then herself.
Port au Choix is a national historic site, having been home to the Atlantic sea, and many Indians Dorset other tribes. Any records left in the land of their dwelling in the area. Along the coast are small towns, whose main occupations were fishing or closure. Today the government has banned fishing for cod, and in black and monthly limits, turbot, lobster, crab and other seafood. The number of lobster traps along the given road, the lobster business has to be very good in the area. On the opposite side of the road are the Long Range Mountains, the Appalachian Mountain Range. The scenery is stunning.
Sega Labrador by the Strait of Belle Isle. We made reservations for the ferry from Cartwright to Goose Bay on Friday evening. We have a couple of days to be spent for the peninsula. The road led us across the peninsula near the northern tip. Here the land is marsh and bog, the place of highest concentration of moose and caribou island. We spent the night along the road near a quarry. So far, no moose or caribou. Maybe they are afraid of Morgana. We did see a bald eagle flying along the coast: the first for us.
Along the road in the local bog areas have planted their gardens, usually potatoes, turnips, onions, cabbage, etc., all the ingredients for a real their 'masks dinner'. Their plots are winds from winds and bigger. Some are miles from the nearest town. There is no poaching of another garden, except by moose and caribou.

Drove to L'Anse aux Meadows (Anse is an old French term for Cove), a heritage World. The site was discovered by Drs. Stine and Helge Ingstad who was in search of Viking settlement called Vinland in the New World. By Norse sagas and maps drawn that the Vikings knew they had come to the area around 1000 AD. They have walked the road taken and recorded by the Viking sagas and stopped to isolated villages asking if there were still in the area. When they came to L'Anse aux Meadows after hundreds of disappointments, fisherman George Decker led to some ruins in the fields of pasture. The origins were unknown. One could have paleoeskimo times or other aboriginal tribe. With their permission Viking ruins discovered c. 1000 AD. They found an iron foundry, the first in North America, with the remains slag left. With the help of the National Geographic Society, found that eight buildings, including houses, workshops, forge and furnace. They have come to believe that a group of 70-90 people here as a constant point of jumping for further explorations south. They are led to believe that Leif Eiriksson also spent some 'time in the resolution, in which the ships have been repaired and sailors were given a safe haven. The site is directly on the Labrador Current, which extends from Greenland and passes from Newfoundland and Labrador. From site can see the shore of Labrador about twenty miles away. Also were found chips of European Pine, which is used for the construction of vessels and a bronze pin to hold together their clothing. Nobody knows why the area was abandoned. Inuit legend that warred with strange men and drove away. Also on the premises is a modern reconstruction of a Viking Age village of Iron. Due to security reasons most ventilation is provided, and the fire is propane. The rest of the building is pretty authentic, judging by My memory of visiting similar facilities in Europe years ago.
On the way out of the car park, we encountered our first moose, three bulls and a cow. They were beside of the road, the boys, laying down their chewing CUD, while the female is standing on them. After a while 'time was given up to them and sauntered off into the forest sector. In a month, the scene will change and men will not be so happy. It will be rutting season and will race against each other for the amorous attentions of the cow. Right now they act like couch potatoes, munching on their snacks and watching the tourists.
Our next stop was the Black Tickle Ecomuseum of berries. Here, local berries are made into jams and other delicacies. The berries include such exotic names as cook apple, squash, partridge, crow, blue, black, crackers, etc. The visitor can see the process through products windows and then sample some of the products for sale.
Our next step is the Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve. Guided tours are provided by the Provincial Pistolet Park twice daily. We were too late for them and then our own. The area looks like a barren rock with patches of green interspersed. In these green areas are more than three hundred different varieties of plants, at least thirty are extremely rare and some are only found on this site. What makes this place so unique is the weather patterns. The area is about one hundred meters above the shore. The winds and waves have carved sea caves and other interesting sights. These same winds, frequent rain and constant fluctuations between warm cold hands make this area a unique ecosystem. Many of the flowers are no bigger than a pin head. You have to be careful where you walk because they do not crush one of them. There are routes you can follow to the other parts of the reserve. They are very narrow and the drop-off at sea is usually fatal. Has a tail, but then saw the storm clouds rapidly increasing in the West. Seeing that the path is very slippery when wet, I did not want to have a bath in cold water. So I headed back to safety.
Our last stop was St. Antonio to pick up the necessary action. This is the home of Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, medical missionary, who has contributed to develop the area and the Minister for the needs of the settlers about 100 years ago.

More rain and wind today with temperatures in anni'40 F. We are glad we did our lap of yesterday. We decided to drive to the ferry at St. Barbe and go to Labrador. We arrived at the ticket office in plenty time for crossing 13:00, but were told that was the only dangerous goods. We have reserved a place for crossing 18:00. Mags was very interested in departure of the ferry, with the bow of the ship such as the closure of a shark mouth. So for the next five hours we had an Otis Redding (Sitting on the Dock of the Bay), had lunch and read while the wind howled around us.
At 17:30 we were the first to board the ship and had a nose position in the stern of the ferry is open at both ends for easy movement of cars and trucks. The crossing took only 1 ½ hours, the fight against the strong wind and the Labrador Current. Many passengers were using the small bags whites. The Apollo is a dowager, needs some TLC. Has to represent, a sit-down restaurant, café, play area for children, and some room recliners. These were difficult to obtain. Since we were one of the first on board, we were lucky. They broadcast the news on a TV in front of us. Due to headwinds We arrived a little 'late to Blanc Sablon, PQ. Mags was happy again, because the boat was opened from the inside this time. (It is easily entertained.) First of all, the boat, we found a perfect parking spot on a hill overlooking Blanc Sablon on one side and L'Anse-au-Clair, NF, on the other: a tale of two cities and provinces.
For our efforts in the day, we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset and Afterglow players all the colors of the spectrum.

The Bronze Bell
$16.77 Twenty minutes wore wearily away. Falling ever more densely, the snow drew an impenetrable wan curtain between Amber and the world of life and light and warmth; while with each discordant blast the strength of the gale seemed to wax, its high hysteric clamour at times drowning even the incessant deep bellow of the ocean surf. Once Amber paused in his patrol, having heard, or fancying he had heard, the staccato plut-plut-plut of a marine motor. On impulse, with a swelling heart, he swung his gun skywards and pulled both triggers. The double report rang in his ears loud as a thunderclap. |
