I studied Nihonto (Japanese blades) and off for over 10 years and is my greatest passion. From the images you have provided, it is more likely "Shingunto" (mass production army sword) or a mass produced blade that was oil placata (Not a true Nihonto) There is a small possibility that the blade is held before you is a "Genda" (Modern Art Sword: After the Meiji Revolution, The art of Japanese sword craftsmen and almost disappeared in subsequent years, the weapons were illegal because in Japan today. To preserve the art of Japanese sword making, the Japanese sword is considered a symbol Japan and a sacred object in the first place, and a second weapon. This allows you to continue the craft and the Japanese people can still own a sword, but was as a car.) Shingunto A can vary from about $ 200 to $ 1,000 and an oil placata blade from $ 400 to $ 1,500. A traditional Genda ranges from $ 1000 for a blade has flaws, but "may justify a Polish" on a blade made completely restored by a blacksmith, which was classified as a "Living National Treasure" completely restored, with no defects in high-quality, two mountains "Juyo" document (one for the blade and the other for service), can very easily sell for more of $ 100,000 in a short period of time. In rare cases it is a traditional blade, which can have what are called "fatal" flaws and that is nothing to a collector, although it is a traditional blade. If it is, in fact a Genda, who has no fatal flaws, we must take care of the blade, and learn how to take care of it, otherwise it should be (or sold) to an owner. I know of several websites that can help you with this. If anyone wants to know more about Nihonto not hesitate to contact me.

The Art of Japanese Sword Polishing The Art of Japanese Sword Polishing
$29.69

Japanese swords have long been prized for their aesthetic beauty as well as their functional properties. As polishing plays a vital role in determining the sword's final shape and appearance, an understanding of the polisher's art is essential for anyone interested in this unique weapon. FROM CHAPTER ONE To understand Japanese sword polishing is to understand the Japanese sword. Down through the years, the great sword connoisseurs in Japan have been sword polishers. A swordsmith can spend a large amount of time forging a classic sword, but refining and bringing out its final shape, color, and texture so that all the details of the steel and hamon (the temper line) are clearly visible is the responsibility of another craftsman the sword polisher. The Art of Japanese Sword Polishing is the first book in English to examine in great detail the polisher's techniques, for which they may apprentice for as long as ten years. It illustrates the methods, materials, and tools used for this process. But the book's true aim is to bring to readers an appreciation of the beauty of a well-crafted Japanese sword. As readers learn both how the sword polisher enhances the beauty of a blade and how he handles the problems of coaxing out its finest qualities through his polishing techniques, they will come to a higher understanding of the fine art of making a Japanese sword, and be able to view, purchase, or collect swords with greater pleasure.

Japanese Sword Drawing Japanese Sword Drawing
$13.01

Japanese Sword Drawing is a complete guide to this esoteric aspect of sword fighting. Written by a noted master, this volume describes the techniques and katas of Muso Shinden Ryu, one of iado's best-known schools. Many of the techniques and katas presented here have never before been available outside of the inner circle of the Muso Shinden Ryu school! Muso Shinden Ryu was founded by the great master Hayashi Jinsuke Shigenobu in the 16th century. Since that time, a succession of masters have guided the progress of the school, often adding katas and modifying techniques as their experiences dictated. Illustrated with nearly 800 photographs, this book records many iaido forms that thus far have only been orally transmitted. It documents the three styles of sword-drawing taught in the Muso Shinden Ryu system: shoden (first tradition), chuden (middle tradition) and okuden (interior tradition), each of which is actually a complete art of sword-drawing in itself. In addition, the sei tei kata (official forms) of the All-Japan Fencing Federation and the All-Japan Sword-Drawing Federation and described in detail. This volume is a must-have classic for practitioners of not only the Japanese sword arts, but sword arts the world over.
The Craft of the Japanese Sword The Craft of the Japanese Sword
$29.35

Well over a thousand years old, the tradition of swordmaking in Japan is one of the most highly regarded metal crafts in the world. When all sword manufacture was prohibited in Japan for seven years after World War II, the age-old techniques were in danger of being lost forever. Today, in thehands of a new generation of practitioners, the craft is making a startling comeback. Connoisseurs say that the swords being produced now are the equal of anything made in Japan in the past few hundred years. This book takes the reader into the workshops of four of Japan's leading sword craftsmen. Each craftsman has a different role in the manufacture of a blade. Yoshindo Yoshihara, the swordsmith, begins with raw steel made in a traditional charcoal-fueled smelter and refines it by folding and forging, gradually shaping it into a sword with a hardened edge. Okisato Fujishiro then sharpens and polishes the sword with fine stones to reveal the color and texture of the steel. Metalworker Hiroshi Miyajima makes the small copper-and-gold habaki collar that fits between the blade and the scabbard. Finally, Kazuyuki Takayama carves the hilt and the scabbard out of a single piece of wood. Black-and-white photographs show every stage of the manufacture, while important information on history, metallurgy, and modern-day appraisal is presented in an extensive introduction. The swords made in Japan today are not, of course, intended for actual use. But their design, the quality of their steel, and the techniques used to create them still derive from the sword's historical function as a lethal hand-held weapon. A sword must be razor sharp, light, well balanced, andstrong, but not sobrittle it will break. In the perfect resolution of these qualities lie the beauty of the blade and the challenge of the craft. This book demonstrates how brilliantly Japan's sword craftsmen today have met this technological challenge. The impulse of the craft now is to preserve the utilitarian object and yet create an enduring art for the modern age. While many fine books on sword appreciation exist, these deal primarilywith older blades or problems of appraisal. The Craft of the Japanese Sword is the first book in English devoted entirely to contemporary sword manufacture, and will thus be of enormous value to metal artists everywhere, as well as to collectors and students of weaponry.

This book examines in detail the Japanese Infantryman who was, despite comparisons with the notorious German Waffen SS, an enigma to Westerners. Brutal in its treatment of prisoners as well as the inhabitants of the areas that it conquered, the Imperial Japanese Army also had exacting standards for its own men - strict codes of honor compelled Japanese soldiers to fight to the death against the more technologically advanced Allies. Identifying the ways in which the Japanese soldier differed from his Western counterpart, the author explores concepts such as Bushido, Seppuku, Shiki and Hakko Ichi-u in order to understand what motivated Japanese warriors.

This moment of perfect clarity that is the force behind all the traditional Japanese arts--from archery to flower arranging--is celebrated here in Dave Lowry''s exploration of the common principles shared by calligraphy and the martial arts. Forty-two examples of Lowry''s calligraphy, accompanied by his essays, show how the way of the brush reflects the strategic principles of the way of the sword. Each calligraphy represents a term from the martial arts--such as do, the way, or wa, harmony. The accompanying text amplifies our understanding of the term, what it meant to Japanese warriors, and what it means to practitioners of calligraphy and the martial arts today. What becomes clear is that these two seemingly unrelated disciplines actually partake of the same profound elemental spirit.

Japanese Society Japanese Society

A brilliant wedding of 'national character' studies and analyses of small societies through the structural approach of British anthropology. One is of course reminded of Ruth Benedict's Chrysanthemum and the Sword which deals also with Japanese national culture. Studies by Margaret Mead and Geoffrey Gorer deal with other national cultures; however, all of these studies take off from national psychology. Professor Nakane comes to explanation of the behavior of Japanese through analysis rather of historical social structure of Japanese society, beginning with the way any two Japanese perceive each other, and following through to the nature of the Japanese corporation and the whole society. Nakane's remarkable achievement, which has already given new insight about themselves to the Japanese, promises to open up a new field of large-society comparative social anthropology which is long overdue. --Sol Tax

The Japanese Sword combines unbreakability, rigidity, and lethal cutting power, and it is in the resolution of these conflicting practical requirements that it emerges as a triumph of the forger's art. The mystique of the sword lingers on in or age of mechanized combat, but the aesthetic qualities for which swords are most valued by collectors today--the liveliness of the metal 'skin' the confidence in every aspect of the design, the scrolling temper-line, the almost buoyant lightness of the hilt when the blade is held in the hand-- all derive from what the Japanese sword demanded as a symbol of strength and as a weapon.

Additionally, the authors focus on the actual method of use of these weapons, hitherto an almost unknown aspect in the West.
