40 – The Arrow – Release – Thunder and Rain
The bow string hums as the arrow zooms forth into the air. After an excoriating buildup, the heavens open to bring a joyous rain. The arrow is the time of release, to let go and pass from the place that we now reside. If there is something to gain by advancing, then we should do so with the utmost force and haste. On the other hand, if there is nothing really to gain, then a calculated retreat would be in order. Regardless, we can no longer stay where we are now. The wise man praises all things south and west while avoiding those east and north.
1st – The Straight Arrow – By follow conventions and remaining aware to avoid simple mistakes, we shall find success in our undertaking.
2nd – Three Birds with One Arrow – Out of necessity, the hunter takes the risky shot and spears three pheasants with a single arrow. Now is the time to take a chance, for the omens be in accord.
3rd – The Jeweled Arrow – Though it may be nice to look at, the jeweled arrow is a bad shot at best and will only attract the attention of thieves and hooligans. The wise man discards vanity and gravitates towards that which is functional.
4th – The Arrow is Dropped – Like a clown, he messes everything up. Though really, it be more humorous than calamity. Rest assured, for a friend will soon arrive to set things straight.
5th – The Arrow Master – The shot is too difficult for the common man; the master steps forth and draws his bow. If we are in command of this situation, then we should go forward. If not, then it would be best to follow the lead of he who holds the reins.
6th – The Arrow Finds Flesh – Piercing through the skin, the arrow brings down a prized bird. This elates the hunter and separates him from the pack. The wise man cultivates his confidence and separates himself from the affairs of lesser men.
All Six – Sheathing the Arrow – There is too much going on for us to safely advance. Better to consolidate the present position, for something may be brewing that we are not aware.
